Mumbai where space is at a premium, and where interior design eventually gets compromised, a space like this comes as a breath of fresh air. For a young couple residing in this 900-square-feet home in Marine Drive, this was one of their main design briefs—a home that was functional and aesthetic - A Contemporary space that is bringing in a sense of warmth, liveliness and comfort.

This Marine Drive residence is an exercise in transforming an apartment into a deeply personal and expressive home—one that balances contemporary restraint with warmth, craftsmanship, and individuality.

The material palette is anchored in deep charcoal, warm timber, muted blue, earthy green, and glass. From the entrance, a timber-and-tinted-glass partition establishes this palette as an architectural gesture, setting the tone for the spaces beyond.

The design language is intentionally restrained, allowing materiality, proportion, and detailing to create character. Textured black surfaces, muted blue veneer, brass and black accents, and carefully articulated grooves introduce depth and tactility without becoming ornamental.

Particular attention has been given to the everyday elements of the home like -Door handles, ledges, partitions, cabinetry, and hardware are treated as integral components of the architecture rather than secondary details. Even the main door handle doubles as a nameplate, reinforcing the idea of a home that is designed around its inhabitants.

The residence is defined by contrast—dark and light, solid and transparent, structured and relaxed. Charcoal tones and darker flooring are balanced by lighter walls and generous natural light, creating a dynamic interplay of shadow, reflection, and texture.

The result is a contemporary yet timeless interior that feels masculine without being austere, refined without being cold, and minimal without losing expression.

At its core, the project is about creating a home that is meant to be lived in rather than simply viewed. Functionality, materiality, and aesthetics are brought together with a quiet precision, allowing the architecture to feel effortless, personal, and enduring.
